Meet the Artist: Sunny Gibbons & Her Favorite Works at Out of the Box

An Artist’s Perspective on Collecting & Living with Art

Art has a way of transforming a space—adding emotion, movement, and meaning that furniture alone simply can’t.

At Out of the Box, we’re excited to introduce Sunny Gibbons, a nationally recognized artist and new associate whose work and perspective bring a fresh layer of inspiration to our collection.

With over 30 years of experience and a background shaped by both family influence and formal training, Sunny offers a unique lens into what makes art not just beautiful—but meaningful.

From Lifelong Influence to Professional Artist

For Sunny, art wasn’t something she discovered—it was something she was born into.

Growing up surrounded by creativity, with a father who was a stained glass artist and an uncle who owned a gallery, art was always part of daily life. That early exposure evolved into a lifelong passion, eventually leading her to study at Parsons School of Design and build a career exhibiting both locally and nationally.

Her work today reflects that journey—deeply personal, expressive, and constantly evolving.

What Inspires Her Work

Sunny draws inspiration from a wide range of influential artists and movements.

From the bold experimentation of Picasso to the emotive landscapes of Georgia O’Keeffe, and the abstract freedom of artists like Franz Kline, her influences span both structure and spontaneity.

That balance shows up in her work—where control and freedom exist side by side.

Mediums, Style & Creative Approach

Rather than limiting herself to a single medium, Sunny works across oils, acrylics, and watercolors—choosing each based on the feeling she wants to convey.

She describes her work as:

  • Deeply personal
  • Idiosyncratic
  • Mood-driven
  • Varied in expression

Each piece becomes a reflection of a moment, rather than a fixed style.

How to Start Collecting Art

For those new to collecting, Sunny’s advice is simple—and powerful:

Go with your gut.

If you love a piece, it belongs in your space. Art isn’t about rules—it’s about connection. And often, the most meaningful collections are built on instinct rather than strategy.

She also highlights an important distinction:

  • Original works are one-of-a-kind and hold the most value
  • Artist-made prints (like engravings or silkscreens) carry more value than reproductions
  • Posters and reproductions offer accessibility, but less uniqueness

Framed or Unframed?

When it comes to presentation, it depends on the medium.

Works on paper should be framed and protected with glass, while canvas or wood panels can be displayed framed or unframed depending on personal preference and the desired look.

Featured Works: Sunny’s Picks & New Originals

Sunny curated a selection of her favorite pieces currently available at Out of the Box—along with two of her own original works .

“Shield,” an abstract oil painting inspired by early Celtic design, features bold tones of golden yellow, orange, and red—bringing energy and symbolism into the space.

Landscape & Regional Art

“Journey” by Debra Joy Groesser offers a sweeping view of the Platte River, showcasing both scale and emotion in landscape painting.

Bold Abstract Statements

A large-scale abstract by Terry Rosenberg delivers movement and energy, inspired by dance and filled with vibrant color.
